Have you ever watched The View? The Barbara Walters produced show that airs weekday mornings at 11am on ABC has been on for almost 20 years. Academy Award Winner Whoopi Goldberg is the current moderator of the female centric talk show.
Recently, the show’s cast members seem to be playing musical chairs and you can’t be sure one day to the next who will be sitting besides Ms.Goldberg. One constant though are Whoopi’s perfect, crisp, white shirts. Often criticized for always wearing the same thing on the show, Goldberg addressed the talk by saying that ever since she was young, she’s developed an obsession with white shirts and that quite honestly, she didn’t feel ”clean” if she wasn’t wearing one.
Since it’s Whoopi’s birthday today, it inspired us to write about choosing the perfect white shirt. Especially if you plan on wearing it every day of your life!
White shirts are obviously timeless and everyone should have at least one good one in their closets. They’re good for all occasions and more importantly, all seasons!
Here are some tips for choosing the right one for you.
It absolutely needs to be structured to perfection. It doesn’t matter whether you wear it up or down, it needs to be on point. A flimsy collar will look cheap and the opposite of the sophisticated look the white shirt is meant to achieve.
Sure, gigantic oversized white shirts are fun for the beach or worn as dresses on a hot summer’s day, but for every day life in the real world, you should opt for a tailored, structured white shirt. It’s almost always more flattering and shows that you know how to dress to impress. It should fit your perfectly. The shoulder seams should follow the outline of your shoulder bone, and the buttons shouldn’t look too stressed over the bust. Don’t hesitate to move around in the changing room and see how the shirt will feel when you live in it.
We feel it’s better to opt for a rounded shirt tail. It’s the better option for wearing the shirt tucked in and left out. It will reduced the bulkiness of the shirt inside your pants when you tuck it in and it will divert attention from your hips when worn out.
Many will chose 100% cotton, but we prefer if the shirt has a little spandex in it. It will reduce wrinkling and just be a little more comfortable all around.
This is the trickiest aspect of buying a white shirt. If you like, you can have a sheer white shirt in your wardrobe for those nights out when you want to show a little skin, but you should definitely have one that is opaque. In a perfect world, it would be opaque enough so that we don’t see what is underneath, but still light enough to be able to layer it during the colder months of the year.
Here at Télio, our most popular fabric used by our clients to make perfect, crisp, white shirts is our Morocco Poplin (style 35894, colour 01) and it’s 97% cotton and 3% spandex. Our clients love it!
