Télio Community Garden

This summer, 22 of our Montreal team members will be testing out their green thumbs in the Télio Community Garden.

Some basic crops we are expecting to see (and share) this summer include:

  • Cucumbers
  • Tomatoes of all varieties including cherry and vine
  • Eggplants
  • Muskmelons/cantaloupes
  • Sweet and hot peppers
  • Zucchinis and their beautiful, edible flowers
  • Strawberries
  • Lettuces
  • Herbs of all kinds including basil, cilantro, rosemary, mint, oregano and chives

Each person (or team of two), will be responsible for the tendering of their land (watering, weeding, etc.) and the harvesting of their plot. Hopefully, the whole office will benefit from the fruits of labour from our team.

In case you are planning to get planting this summer, here are a couple tips for herbs you can apply to your home or office garden:

  1. Coriander/Cilantro: This herb is strong in flavour and can pass along its taste to other surrounding crops. Make sure to contain cilantro in its own container to keep everything tasting, as it should.
  2. Mint: Delicious in cocktails and with lamb, mint is actually a weed. Like coriander, it needs to be planted in a separate environment or it may take over other crops by encroaching on their space and using up their resources.
  3. Rosemary: Unique to rosemary is its resilience. At the end of the season, you can transplant rosemary into a pot to bring indoors. With enough sunlight and care, it can last all winter, so you can replant the rosemary the following spring.
  4. Basil: If you only have room to grow one basil plant, make it ‘Genovese’; this variety is the best for making pesto and bruschetta… if space permits, also try beautiful purple basil.
  5. Trim and cut: If your herbs grow flowers, simply trim them away. As you take herbs to use, cut them off the top. That way the plant has less work to do to keep hydrated and healthy (i.e. water has less distance to travel from root to leaf).

Good luck to the 22 employees who are sharing 20 plots. We hope it’s a warm, bountiful summer for everyone. Check out the Télio Fashion Fabrics social media accounts for more Community Garden updates throughout the summer.

We would love to hear from you!
