As you’ll see later on this week, here at Télio, we love to discuss famous pieces of clothing. Those garments that touch the zeitgeist of society and become pop culture phenomenons.
Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the release of Michael Jackson‘s seminal album Thriller. If you’re like us, you can’t hear the name thriller without thinking of Michael’s fabulous red leather jacket from the classic video!
Surprisingly, the jacket was designed by Deborah Nadoolman Landis (wife of John Landis, the director of the Thriller video). We always assumed it was custom made by some famous designer. Another thing we had never noticed, the black V on the front of the jacket is supposed to create a giant M, paired with the two black stripes on the arms of the jacket! The original jacket was sold at auction 4 years ago for 1.8 million dollars! According to the buyer, it is a small price to pay for the single greatest piece of rock and roll memorabilia in history.
We sure hope he’s enjoying it!
If you were alive in the 1980’s, you probably came across a few hundred Thriller inspired knock-offs, you might even have owned one yourself. They were the trendiest thing to come out of the mid-80’s. Every teen wanted one and they came in a variety of different price points. Some of them were a little too good, Jackson filed a lawsuit in 1984 preventing the sale of unauthorized exact replicas of the jacket!
You can order a made to measure one here.
If you wanted to make you yourself however, we have 2 faux leathers that would do the trick! Our Perfecto Leather (style 33836, colour 05) pictured on the left and our Rebel Leather (style 34964, colour 05) on the right, would work perfectly.
We’re celebrating the album’s anniversary today at the office by listening to it on repeat! We suggest you do the same, and if you own a Thriller jacket replica, by all means put it on!
