Widely regarded as a fashionista ever since her New York club kid days in the 1990s, Chloë Sevigny has become quite a force in the fashion industry.
Sevigny is a fashion risk taker and that’s a rare quality in an industry that is obsessed with ending up on the best dressed list. Celebrities usually play it safe. Chloë does fashion her way, she sticks to her guns and usually ends up on the best dressed list anyway. Her personal style is so legendary that Rizzoli books published a coffee table picture book of her style legacy in April of this year. Sevigny is only 40 years old, mind you.
Sevigny was famously discovered hanging out in a park with her friends and was offered her breakout role in Larry Clark‘s seminal 1995 film Kids. That film alone cemented her place in independent film history. She then followed up with acclaimed performances in The Last Days of Disco (1998), Boys Don’t Cry (1999) for which she received an Academy Award nomination, American Psycho (2000), Dogville (2003) and Zodiac (2007). HBO aficionados have a special place for her character of Nicolette on the long running polygamist drama Big Love.
Chloë has fronted international fashion campaigns for Miu Miu, H&M, Louis Vuitton and Chloé. She has tried her hand at designing many times, namely with her Opening Ceremony collaboration, amongst others.
We’ve often heard Sevigny’s style described as eclectic, but we don’t really agree with that statement, to us, Chloë’s style is very Chloe. We can pick up a garment in a store or a vintage shop and say ”This is so Chloë!’‘ Sevigny has said many times that her favourite television show growing up was Little House on the Prairie and that the only thing she wore were calico print dresses (which she still occasionally wears), this to us, seems up her style perfectly.
Here are our top 5 favourite Chloë Sevigny looks of all time:
05. Metropolitan Opera Gala premiere of Armida (2010)
Sevigny wears a simply black jumpsuit with long gold necklace, but it’s those old school evening gloves that make this a Chloë Sevigny look. We love a good glove moment almost as much as Amal Clooney!
04. HBO Golden Globes after party (2006)
Chloë wore an amazing eighties inspired to the official HBO after party for the 2006 Golden Globes, this looks like Lanvin, but knowing Chloë it’s probably vintage. We’re in love with those big puffy shoulders, very Dynasty!
03. The Opening of The Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial Day for Night (2006) & New Museum 35th Anniversary Gala (2012)
Sevigny knows how to rock a white suit. She has famously worn one to great effect in 2006 at a Whitney Museum opening, the little black neck tie she wore has us thinking she took inspiration from Colonel Sanders, but it totally works on here. Chloë opted for a different vibe in 2012 when she wore all white the second time. We can’t wait for her to do it again!
02. Golden Globes (2009)
Chloë wore this delicate polkadot Isaac Mizrahi creation to the 2009 Golden Globe awards and we adore this look on her! It feels so fresh, clean and just plain cute!
01. Academy Awards (2000)
Sevigny’s first big fashion moment, her first time at the Oscars and she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Boys Don’t Cry. This Yves Saint Laurent gown is dramatic in all the right ways and most of all, it is classic. She’ll still be able to look at photos of herself on this night in 20 years and think she looks good. It will never feel dated, it’s classic Hollywood.
