Labelling a trend as ‘the return of the waist‘ can seem quite bold and semi-redundant, the waist never really went away, it was always there, visible, even exposed, but now we’re putting actual emphasis on it. We’re embellishing it.
For a few seasons now, we’ve been wearing clothing that has utilized our waists but that hasn’t really shone a light on it. Made it the center of attention, the first thing the eye notices.
This season, the hourglass figure is finally back!
According to the runway shows we’ve been devouring, there are three ways to place emphasis on the waist. The belt, the obvious first choice, and its big buckle, makes an appearance. As well as the band, which has transitioned from simply being a waistband to being an integral part of the outfit. It used to be hidden, now it is showcased! The third way to bring much needed attention to your waist is with the good old bow! We know bows can be a scary thing for grown women, but worn the right way, they don’t always make you look like a 6 year-old.
We’ve seen countless belts at Etro, Dior, Emilia Wickstead, Jason Wu, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, Roksanda, Roland Mouret and obviously Versace. They’re being worn over coats, dresses, and jump suits!
Bands are being showcased as part of skirts, dressed, coats and complex top constructions. We saw them on the runway at Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Tom Ford and Gucci.
Luckily, we only saw a bow on the runway at Giles, but it’s still a valid option!
