When you love fashion and style it doesn’t begin and end with the clothes you wear. It takes over all other aspects of your life. You read books about style, you visit fashion exhibitions, you devour editorial magazines and sometimes you get to go see a stylish film!
Every few years, a film comes along that redefines style as well as how we look at fashion. It doesn’t have to be about fashion per say, it can be about something else, but the characters have to have style. They don’t have to necessarily dress well, but they have their own unique take on fashion, which is always exciting to see, as a fashion aficionado.
For your viewing pleasure, we’re giving you out Top 10 most inspiring stylish films. Note that we didn’t include any fashion documentaries in this list, we’ll do one of those soon!
Here is our Top 10:
10. A Single Man (2009)
Could we really expect anything less from a film directed by Tom Ford? Absolutely not. He delivers and then some. All the men in the film wear expertly tailored suits, and one of our favourite actresses, Julianne Moore, looks absolutely breathtaking as a fifties socialite. Apart from the clothes, the cinematography looks stunning and the bizarre love story won’t ever be forgotten!
09. Zoolander (2001)
In this film, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson poke fun at the fashion industry big time, with the help of Will Ferrell, Milla Jovovich and David Bowie. the film follows a male model as his career slowly comes to a halt and the career of a new model takes precedent. We can’t wait for the hilarious sequel next year!
08. The Fifth Element (1997)
This futuristic Luc Besson film blew everyone’s mind when it came out. The visuals and special effects were truly out of this world. Famous French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier was hired to design most of the costumes for the film, including Milla Jovovich’s iconic symmetrical white strap outfit.
07. Working Girl (1988)
The touching tale of a woman trying to navigate her way in the business world of 1980s New York City is brilliantly directed by the late great Mike Nichols, but it was Melanie Griffith’s star making turn as Tess McGill that made the movie the success it was. The film works as a period piece now and most of all a cautionary tale about shoulder pads and spray-net.
06. Grease (1978)
This ode to 1950s rock ‘n’ roll is an absolute classic, the costumes are cute (and perfect for Halloween). The Pink Ladies jackets are girly and fun but for us it’s really Olivia Newton-John’s bad girl outfit from the end of the film that makes this film so memorable. Rumour has it she had to be sewn into that outfit every morning during filming.
05. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Every character in this crazy family story has their own distinct style and persona. We particularly like Ben Stiller’s tracksuit wearing father and sons team and Gwyneth Paltrow’s deliciously depressing fur coat wearing Margot Tenenbaum.
04. Mildred Pierce (1945)
If there is one woman in history that will forever be associated with shoulder pads it is Joan Crawford (and not Lady Gaga). As a woman coming to terms with her rebellious daughter, Crawford never met a should pad she didn’t like. Let’s be honest though, they look amazing on her!
03. Clueless (1995)
We talked about this film in great detail a few weeks ago, when it turned 20. Read the piece here.
02. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
Perhaps the most famous little black dress ever put to film, and designed by Hubert de Givenchy himself, this film has no contemporaries when it comes to fashion. Did we mention it stars Audrey Hepburn? Yes.
01. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
A film that is about the most powerful woman in the fashion industry deserves to be at the top of our list! The film’s costume design was provided by stylist extraordinaire Patricia Field (of Sex and the City fame) and it shows! All the outfits are stunning and everyone looks amazing; Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and even the hilarious Stanley Tucci!
