Today is the legendary Meryl Streep’s 66th birthday and we thought we could celebrate by looking at Meryl’s career-best fashion moments as well as some of her best performances on film.
That being said, Streep was never really known as a fashion girl, she has said herself that it’s a world that doesn’t really interest her and she much prefers being comfortable rather than fashionable (shouldn’t we all?). Regardless of this fact, she has still had some pretty awesome fashion moments in her career.
The dress she wore to the 1983 Academy Awards, to accept her Oscar for her performance in Sophie’s Choice was a cute gold sequin number, made all the more cuter by the fact that she was pregnant with her first daughter Mamie. Unfortunately, the designer of the dress is unknown because in those days, the red carpet fashion scene wasn’t as intense as it is today and actresses actually went out and bought their dresses, instead of having them on loan from designers and hiring stylists to take care of the whole process.
At the 2010 Oscars, where Meryl was nominated for her portrayal of Julia Child in the terrific Julie & Julia, Streep wore a stunning white Chris March gown that fit her perfectly. Meryl loves a column dress and column dresses love her back, they always look amazing on her! It’s age-appropriate and timelessly elegant!
The same year, Meryl dazzled in another column dress at the Screen Actors Guild awards, this time by Balenciaga. The gorgeous green and navy floral print demands all the attention, and paired with that black patent leather belt, it gives the entire look a certain edge than only MERYL STREEP can pull off. She didn’t win anything that night, but that dress was a fashion winner!
It took us a while to come to an agreement on this, but we’re pretty confident we’ve come to a pretty fair list. Here are what we consider Meryl Streep’s Top 5 film performances, in chronological order of course.
05. Death Becomes Her (1992)
A great comedic performance from Meryl in a cooky thriller/comedy about the dangers of living forever. It’s hilarious to watch Streep ham it up with her pal Goldie Hawn!
04. Adaptation. (2002)
Meryl won a Golden Globe for her perfect portrayal of a writer who gets in way over her head with one of her book subjects.
03. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
As a mother who chooses to leave her family behind, Streep brought an essential vulnerability to a role that could have been seen as purely evil if played by any other actress.
02. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Mean has never looked so good or been so much fun! Meryl gives us her take on a version of Vogue Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
01. Sophie’s Choice (1982)
As a mother during the Second World War, Meryl is faced with an impossible decision and makes us feel for her in ways we’d never experienced before.
