Sixty-six years ago today, George Orwell’s classic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four was published. The legendary tale of government surveillance and persecution of individualism was in many ways a foreshadowing of the world in which we live today. Social media and big business are playing the same role Big Brother did in Nineteen Eighty-Four.
The actual year 1984 wasn’t as crazy as the book however. Although some would argue that the fashion from the time was pretty out there. Which is why on this book anniversary we decided to look back at what was happening in the real world in 1984.
To this day, no party is complete without hearing Cyndi Lauper’s 1984 mega hit Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and who could forget Tina Turner’s anthem What’s Love Got To Do With It? If you were alive in 1984, there’s a 95% chance you owned a copy of Purple Rain on cassette, the best-selling soundtrack to Prince’s hugely popular musical.
Perhaps the first name we think of when we reminisce about 1984 is Madonna. A woman who had a major impact on not only that year, but that whole decade. In 1984, she wiggled around on stage at the first ever MTV Video Music Awards in a wedding dress cementing her reputation as a… fan of lace!
Speaking of lace, it was truly everywhere in 1984. Lace, Mesh and all things see-through. Paired with leather, shoulder pads and accessories, lots of accessories.
Interestingly, lace and mesh are very trendy for spring/summer 2015. Overdosing on accessories however, is not.
Looking back, it would appear that the real life 1984 was a very fun year. The Los Angeles Olympics were a great success, Sally Field discovered that the movie viewing public liked her, John Galliano had his first show, movie tickets were 2.50$ and makeup giant M.A.C. was born.
It seems almost impossible that one cinematic year gave us such gems as; Ghostbusters, Footloose, Terms of Endearment, Gremlins, The Terminator, Sixteen Candles and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! Not to mention perhaps the best music video of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller!
What do you remember about 1984? Have you stocked up on lace and mesh for Spring/Summer 2015?
