The mother of modern dance, Martha Graham, was born 121 years ago today. It’s hard to image what the dance world as a whole would look like today if this icon had never existed. Her techniques are still widely used today all over the world.
”No artist is ahead of his time. He is his time; it is just that others are behind the times.”
What fascinates us about Graham, is the way she used clothes. She seemed to always choose heavy fabric with the ability to look flowy and light in movement. She appeared to be a big fan of plain old cotton knits, which you can see in a lot of old promotional photos of her dancing.
It’s hard to believe that she managed to choreograph full shows until her death in 1991, at the young age of 96. When the passion for dance burns inside of you, nothing can keep you down. One can only hope to have a successful 70 year career in any field, let alone dance!
Martha is an inspiration to us all!
