”When I saw Alek, I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny.”
Such is the impact that South Sudanese born model Alek Wek had on young girls all over the world when she rose to fame in the 1990s. There had never been a black model who didn’t conform to the Caucasian beauty aesthetics before.
Oprah Winfrey told Wek when she was a guest on her show ”If you had been on the cover of a magazine when I was growing up, I would have had a different concept of who I was.”
Wek was discovered by a model scout at the age of 18 in an outdoor market in London, where she had fled with her family four years prior to escape the civil war in South Sudan. Her career took off instantly, within months she was on the set of Tina Turner’s video shoot for her James Bond theme song ‘GoldenEye’.
1997’s Model of the Year (a title bestowed upon her by MTV) has the distinct ability to pull off any look, any style, any colour. We would die to have her stop by our show room and play around with multitudes of coloured and textured fabrics. Imagine the instagram photos!
Alek has worked with hundreds of fashion houses, including; Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Chanel, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Christian Dior, Fendi & even Victoria’s Secret.
Alek Wek is a fashion icon and an inspiration to us all. We wish her an amazing birthday and much success in all her projects.
We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!
