Would you believe us if we told you that Vivienne Westwood is an ex-primary school teacher? Probably not, right?
Well she is, and today is her birthday! The First Lady of Punk turns 74 and she’s as influential as ever!
The political and environmental activist is single-handedly responsible for bringing punk and new wave into fashion’s mainstream culture. When she hooked up with the Sex Pistols’ manager Malcolm McLaren and started designing clothes for his shop and the band, the world didn’t know what it had coming. Westwood is one of the select few designers to have truly made a mark on the 20th century. Every time you wear plaid, it’s a little because of Viv.
Here are a few interesting pop culture facts about Vivienne Westwood:
-She designed Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding dress in the 2008 Sex and the City movie.
-She designed Pharrell Williams’ very controversial 2014 Grammy hat.
-She designed the shoes that made model Naomi Campbell take a nasty fall on the runway in 1993.
-Her son with Malcolm McLaren, Joseph Corré is the co-founder of mega-successful lingerie brand Agent Provocateur.
