With the turn of the seasons, you might have had to be living under a rock to not have noticed that jean is IN for the upcoming warmer months, and not just in the traditional sense. This versatile and oh-so-comfy material has been hailed by designers, including Alexa Chung, as the “it” textile for this season, with dresses, pants, shirts, jackets, and skirts alike all taking a dive into the blue. Perhaps stemming from the indigo blue trend, or the popular revival of 70s styles which dominated the runways this fall, denim is being appropriated in all types of garments, and breaking away from the traditional.
So, how can you rock a full-on denim look without looking like Britney and Justin circa 2001? We’ve put together a list of key jean items to help build up your denim staples for the season!
Flares or Gilrfriend jeans: You know flares are back, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be updated for a fresher look. If you’re not crazy about giving up straight legs in favor of flares, go for a fresh style like these jeans from Mother (pictured below) which offer a straight leg style with a slit at the ankle, for a subtle take on flares (and perfect for showing off your summery sandals or strapped ankle heels). And about those girlfriend jeans. What are they exactly? While they are extremely similar to the boyfriend cut which were all the rage last year, the girlfriend cut offers a more feminine take, hugging the hips and outlining the legs, while still providing comfort. These American Apparel ones seem to suit the description (see picture below)!
The A-Line button-down jean dress: Yes, just like the one from AC for AG. What can we say-we truly are in love with this collection! This style is flattering for several body types, is sexy without being skin tight, and is just the ideal garment for lounging and running errands in during the warmer months all while looking effortlessly stylish. Layer with it or wear it on its own, this piece can be worn on those cooler summer days with strappy sandals, and transitioned into the crisper fall months with some burgundy tights and leather boots. While you’re at it, check out the button-down skirt, too.
Jean peasant top: Another blending of two big fashion trends, denim embraces the bohemian 70s peasant top like peanut butter and avocado (seriously, try it). The indigo jean color pairs beautifully with off-white embroidery detailing, and looks adorable in the loose-fitting peasant style.
Jean Blazer: A step up from your favourite jean jacket, the jean blazer is more body hugging and sleek, perfect for casually dressing up an outfit. Wear this piece styled over patterned summer dress to carry you from the office to a terrace dinner with drinks. A jean blazer can also be paired with jean of another shade, or with white or black pants.
