Just when you think that you’ve seen the next-level revealing sheer dress at the latest A-lister event, another riské celeb seems to top it. Now don’t get me wrong- some celebs really know how to work the sheer dress, but in many instances (see middle picture…) they are without a doubt fashioned primarily to provoke.
Let me just say that I love sheer looks. Not so much the barely-there styles worn by scandalous celebrities; I’m talking about realistically wearable sheer items, designed for the regular joe (or jane).
For today’s Trendy Tuesday, we’re discussing all things sheer, and how you can achieve this look. Sheers add an element of fragility and delicacy to looks, but can also add an edgy feel, depending on how they are fashioned. Here’s some tips to help you pull off sheer.
– Go for a sheer blouse: This loose fitting, airy item adds volume to an outfit, and can be easily layered. That’s not to say that you have to layer it- sometimes a little bra can be sexy. Sheer shirts with patterns or front pockets work better for un-layered looks, subtly showing some skin while distracting from your bra. A sheer blouse is ideal buttoned up, tucked into some skinny jeans or fitted trousers. A perfect way to balance an outfit on warmer autumn days, or chillier summer days, the sheer blouse is a closet staple.
– Try embellished sheers: Sheers with a sprinkling of jewels or sequins add interest and refinement to an outfit. Layered over a garment of the same color, these pieces will add feminine detailing and a subtle or exaggerated bling element, dependent on your tastes! For S/S 15, we’ve noticed many embellished sheers paying homage to 70s styles, but with a contemporary twist!
– Layer with skirts and dresses: Try layered an oversized sheer shirt over a fitted, solid coloured dress. You can also opt for a longer sheer maxi skirt which can be layered over a mini to add dimensionality and show off some leg without being overexposed. These looks can be worn in the fall if you choose darker colour palettes.
