A few days before our 2014 grand finale event, we present you one of two new jury members that will be on TÉLIO’s panel next Monday to choose this year’s 5 Canada’s Breakthrough Designers winners!
Today, Emily Ramshaw from FLARE Magazine.
We asked, they answered: Quick questions to learn a little bit more about Emily!
What is your background – did you study in Fashion? I didn’t study fashion at all! I went to McGill University and majored in Cultural Studies with minors in American History and Communications Studies. I have long loved fashion and magazines, however, so I applied for a number of internship positions upon my graduation and was accepted in the program at Flare.
What brought you to fashion? I discovered fashion through my grandmother, who had a massive clothing collection from her many travels. When I was a teenager I found the fantasy of fashion in magazines like Vogue and W and I’ve been obsessed ever since.
What’s a typical day for you? There’s no such thing as typical! Most of my days revolve around planning stories, which can mean anything from research and interviewing sources to writing and editing.
What is your main motivation when doing what you do? The best part of my job is meeting the many talented designers and businesspeople who make fashion what it is. Talking to them is endlessly inspiring.
Describe your personal style? I’m terrible at answering this question! My style is streamlined and easy-going. On any given day, I’m usually wearing a button-down shirt, skinny jeans and a pullover sweater with one statement piece.
Favourite shopping destination? Local boutiques in Toronto like Jonathan & Olivia and Gravity Pope. Otherwise, in my experience London is the best shopping city in the world.
Favourite item in your closet? An embroidered kimono that was my grandmother’s. A pair of printed Tabitha Simmons stiletto sandals.
Current trend you love? Oversized coats, plaid and pastels.
Favourite designer at the moment? Christopher Kane.
Vacation getaway you dream about? A week at Hotel Il Pellicano on the Tuscan coast in Italy.
Where is your favourite place to relax? My cottage.
Name a writer that inspires you. Joan Didion.
Motto you live by? This isn’t a moto per se, but this quote from Diana Vreeland is a good guiding principle. “The only real elegance is in the mind; if you’ve got that, the rest really comes from it.”
Soon to come, our second new jury member, Sonia Moffa from Joseph Ribkoff!
