While the holiday season is one of the most exciting times of the year, it also ends up being the busiest. Being a year long list-maker, I am spinning from the crazy amount that I have been making this month. I swear I have one for everything; from the gifts I want to give, to the gifts I would like to receive. I also have lists for the fancy recipes I want to cook, the endless holiday movies I want to watch, the festive playlists I want to listen to, the books that I want to read, and even what I plan on wearing on Christmas Eve, Christmas day and New Year’s Eve. And since I know that I am not the only one who spends time thinking about what they are going to wear for the holidays, I have created a vintage but modern style guide to help you cross off your ‘what to wear’ list and help prevent you from the headache that comes with planning your holiday style! Here are 6 vintage yet modern holiday styles to get inspired by!
1. The Fancy 40’s Inspired Sweater
Not only are they cozy and comfortable, but fancy sweaters remind us of that 1940’s hand knitted look and I think they are an essential piece for the 2013/14 Holiday season! The timeless Fair Isle Scottish print is seen on sweater necklines and sleeves, a beautiful addition. Don’t you want to feel cute and warm sitting next to the fireplace?
2. The Illusion dress inspired by the 50’s
Elegant, feminine and full of grace, the illusion dress is my idea of a key-piece for a chic Christmas party look. If you want to look as fabulous as Grace Kelly, then go for something similar to this magical, romantic dresses shown above. You will be sure to dazzle the crowds and definitely turn some heads!
3. Festive Marabou and Ostrich Feathers Inspired by the 60’s
Opulent marabou and ostrich feathers are a nod to 60’s couture. Balenciaga made them popular with their fabulous eveningwear lines and they have been seen everywhere this year with all of the “Gatsby” madness. If you want to look Gatsby glamorous this holiday season then this is the style for you!
4. Embellished Tops Inspired by the 70’s
It’s sweater season! But who wants to go to a party in a simple sweater? Bring a little something extra to your knitwear with the addition of sequins, glitter, beading and ornate buttons. This style is the perfect jazzy addition to a feminine holiday look.
5. The Sophisticated Slit Skirt Inspired by the 80’s
The slit skirt has become the most desired detail by designers this season! We saw a lot of stars including Angelina Jolie, Rihanna & Uma Thurman embracing this sexy and sophisticated look. This rockabilly revival is also a good feature for petites and the nice vertical line is flattering for every silhouette. Ladies, expose those legs for the holidays!
6. The Slip ‘Kate Moss ‘Dress Inspired by the 90’s
How fantastic would it be to wear pajamas to a holiday party, and it be both beautiful and socially acceptable? Well, while it’s not exactly a pajama, the timeless slip dress sure feels like one and it is back this season in a classic minimalist version. It’s all about the silky finish and delicate details that make it so gorgeous. The lace additions, sheer insertions and paneled asymmetrical cuts add a feminine and modern twist to the grunge inspired 90’s slip dress. Pair it with a chunky sweater or an oversized wool coat for a dazzling look.
I hope this guide helps you with your holiday party style! What are your favorite looks for the holidays?
